The Senufo Female Statue created by a Senufo artist known as the Master of Sikasso from Ivory Coast in the 19th or early 20th century, is the most valueable and most iconic piece of African Art. As half of the ancestral couple of the Senufo people, this statue would have been kept with her mate in a shrine. The statue pair would only be taken out for special occasions such as funeral processions, when the newly dead were initiated into the spirit world. One of the greatest achievements of man in the sculptural representation of the human form, the statue transcends the corpus of African art and is best described as a masterpiece of world art. Senufo Female Statue shattered the previous world record when it went for $12m. The Ivory Coast sculpture is one of only five Senufo figures of its kind.
